A lack of private property rights is one of the main contributors to poverty and economic underdevelopment. This is particularly true on many Native American reservations where land is “owned by the community” — making reservations quite possibly the most socialist parts of the United States. It would be significantly better to remove the government’s influence in the domain of private property. The best reparations would be to privatize all land on reservations so that individuals can sell or cultivate the land as they see fit.
When individuals do not have the right to own or control specific plots of land it leads to stagnancy and corruption. John Locke told us the key to prosperity and a free country is life, liberty, and property. However, governments around the world work tirelessly to remove these rights. (Do you really own your land if you must pay property taxes on it forever?) The government owns between 28-33% of the land in the United States. Granted much of that land is in Alaska (roughly 222.7 million acres) but the US government owns over 640 million acres. Just in case any pro-reparations people want some land, I would say 40 acres and a mule up near the North Pole is a great spot. Go check it out.
I know times are tough. High inflation, gas prices, and rent or mortgages mean it’s not always so easy to pay bills. However, I appreciate anyone willing to become a paid subscriber. Some of my content will be paid from here on out. With 100ish or more paid subscribers (Heck. Even 30 would be nice) I will be able to spend much more time writing the articles that people really want, like Leave Children Alone, Bud Light is Dead, and The Government Hates It When You Give Things Away for Free.
