I recently read the book Unschool Yourself by entrepreneur, Jason Xie.
The book is in the same vein as John Taylor Gatto’s writings but focuses on practical activities anyone can do. This book can be useful for all of us, but it is mostly directed at current students.
The book description,
Have you ever found yourself bored sitting in a classroom? Or have you ever found yourself feeling powerless because you have no idea about how to do something? Or are you ever mad at yourself for not fulfilling your full potential? I have been there. Unschool Yourself is a collection of ideas about how to be innovative while attending school.
The main objectives of the book are creativity, resilience, dealing with failure, risk-taking, and some advice on discovering financial success.
The book is quite short. Only 80 pages, so you might be able to get a young person to read it. And it’s only $5, so the price won’t break the bank. Check out Unschool Yourself.
What follows below is 1,000 words based around the notes I took from the book.
Creating Creativity
Gatto understood that “genius is as common as dirt” and that creativity is often suppressed by public school education.
